BAYSTONE BANK FARM CAMPSITE RULES & POLICIES:

We are a small family campsite with a peaceful, relaxed feel; we want you to have a wonderful experience here with us. In booking to stay with us we assume you have read and accept these and our FAQ’s, and as relevant our Group Policy, Covid policy and Dog Policy so you understand your responsibilities whilst staying with us, so there are no misunderstandings.

To ensure the safety and happiness of yourself and others using the site we have some site rules. I have tried to explain WHY we have these rules (as some of you will not be from farming/camping backgrounds) so you understand why you must follow them. Please read these carefully, adhere to them, and explain them to your children; help us to help you have the best holiday possible here, thank you!

NOISE

  • We are a family friendly site. Loud music which infringes on other campers enjoyment is not OK.. Music at a low level is fine, but if we have any complaints/we feel it is too loud at any time of day then you will be asked to turn it down. If you ignore us, you will be asked to leave. .
  • We are a quiet site so after 10:30pm you will be asked to turn your music off so everyone can have a decent night’s sleep.. If you are not listening to the wardens (who are representing the owner), then sorry but it’s not fair on everyone, you will be asked to leave.
  • No generators, these disrupt the site’s tranquility

DRIVING ON THE SITE / VEHICLES

  • Your vehicle is parked and left here at your own risk, we take all reasonable precautions to keep the site safe, but it is your responsibility.
  • Our MAXIMUM speed limit is 5mph anywhere on the farm, including the drive. To help you understand what 5mph is, it’s walking speed. Children and animals can move into your path quite rapidly, so please, help us to keep this a safe site.
  • All drivers must hold a Full UK Licence and insurance.
  • Do not cause a nuisance by revving car engines please.
  • Do not drive or park on any grass areas or pitches not booked by yourselves, EVER.
  • DO NOT ‘cut corners’ on the site by driving across unoccupied pitches. At times of heavy rain the grass becomes very soft due to rainfall. If you get ignore this advice you will churn up the site, damaging it for future campers, and you will be billed. If you become stuck having ignored the rules and ground conditions causing damage, and require being towed off, you will be charged.

PARKING

  • Pitches this side of the stream have parking available, S1-10 and electric piytches. If you have a enormous tent you won’t fit the car on, and will be charged additional for parking, If you want two pitches because of the size of your tent, book two pitches.
  • There are a few other pitches with parking, this is shown on the site map.
  • All other pitches have car parking in the car park. Places are marked to assist us in fitting everyone on. There are a few other spots, so if you are stuck please call the wardens.
  • Parking is at your own risk.

CHILDREN

  • Your children are your responsibility. We expect that they will be supervised at all times (bearing in mind this is a working Lake District Farm not a play area) and made aware of the campsite rules. This is the countryside! Do not enter any fields, gated areas, or farm areas. These are off limits. Please read all of our rules to them! YOU are responsible for YOUR CHILDREN AT ALL TIMES.
  • Do not, yourselves or your children, climb onto any structure above ground height, which includes fences, gates, stone walls, farm machinery, our tractors, horse lorry/trailers, hay bales, trees, bridges, rocks… ANYWHERE really where children – or adults – might fall and injure themselves.

THE STREAM

  • The stream is a flowing waterway, it is not fenced off as children enjoy playing in it. There is a danger of drowning which we must bring to your attention. As above, supervising your children is your responsibility. Do not let your children play in the stream if you do not accept that you take full responsibility for them.
  • Whilst the stream is a wonderful play area, play must be supervised as the depth is variable, as can be the amount of water flowing dependant on recent rainfall. No throwing of stones, polluting or damming it! At times of heavy rainfall it can become considerably stronger, please do not permit your children to play in it at these times. Please do not remove stones from it. The natural condition of the trees/ vegetation and our beautiful stream must be preserved.

COMMONSENSE!

  • We know that it is often seen as a rare commodity but please use common sense around the farm: do not put yourselves or your children in a position of danger! If you feel there is a risk which we have not addressed or are unaware of – PLEASE TELL US! – so we can raise communal awareness and help make your stay here both fabulous and safe!
  • Please report any accidents however small.
  • Absolutely no fire-arms or offensive weapons are allowed on site at any time.
  • We do not permit drones.
  • No kites, balloons, or lanterns as these can be hazardous to livestock.

FEEDING LIVESTOCK

  • DO NOT FEED ANY LIVESTOCK AT ANY TIME…… we cannot emphasise this enough – particularly the horses! You can make them VERY ILL or even cause death by unwittingly feeding a product which is toxic to them.

ACCESS

  • The horse/yard area and ALL fields with livestock in are STRICTLY NO ENTRY AT ALL TIMES.
  • YARD TOURS can be arranged In daylight hours and only if accompanied by a member of staff and pre so you have supervised entry to meet the horses. This is if we are not busy and it is safe to do so. If we are able to do that for you a fee is charged of £5 per adult and £2 per child, children must be accompanied by an adult and held onto at all times. Your fee simplygoes towards the upkeep of the horses.
  • The entire farm is not a footpath, so please keep to the paths. Neighbouring farmers will also get very upset (possibly very cross and they do shout!) if you roam around their fields. Consider this akin to having folk trample around your garden and not caring about how you make your living. Please refer to the maps on display in the shower block showing lovely routes locally which should enable you to enjoy the area, and the maps sent to you with your Booking Pack. If a gate says no entry or has no signs indicating that it is a footpath, it is private.
  • Hill walking: download the Ordnance Survey Maps App to your phone, or the ViewRanger App, both are very good, and a fabulous resource if you wish to go walking here.

DOGS

If you are considering bringing your dog please read our full DOG POLICY before booking.

  • DOGS must be on a lead at all times.

Strictly, everywhere on the farm.. If you allow your dog off the lead in such a livestock area as the Lake District, where Agriculture is one of the main livelihoods for people, on this or neighbouring farms, please be aware that they run a high risk of being shot if they are chasing or frightening sheep. It might appear harmless to you but can cause ewes to abort, or loose a lamb which could then die. This is unnecessary and very distressing. Your dog is a visitor to this country/farming lifestyle, please keep your dog under control and respect it!

  • You must clean up all excrement immediately Dog mess can be extremely hazardous for people and can cause infections such as Salmonella and Toxicariasis in livestock (our sheep, cows and horses) causing miscarriage or even death from diseases such as Neosporosis and Sarcocystosis
  • Our farm dogs Jazz and Baggins live here and have always ambled about. If they visit you, they are very friendly (Baggins in particular), however if they become a nuisance (e.g. your BBQ/meal times) please tell us.and DO NOT feed them tell them to‘go home ’in a stern voice! They are far from starved and have got begging off to a fine art!
  • * TEACH YOUR CHILDREN HOW TO BEHAVE AROUND DOGS*

Re Jazz, Baggins and ANY OTHER DOGS.

DO NOT THROW OBJECTS FOR THEM TO RETRIEVE OR PLAY RUNNING GAMES

Retreiving games: Baggins is old and it causes him to get very, very sore in his right shoulder, he literally cannot walk that evening. You should equally never do this with other peoples dogs, who learn to grab sticks (they get horrible splinters in their mouths) or stones (damages their teeth).

Running away screaming type games: Collies are working dogs and their instinct is to round up sheep, part of which is nipping the sheeps heels to move them along. If your children are encouraging silly behaviour by running at the dogs or shouting at them and frightening /worrying them this is enough to irritate/worry any breed, so take responsibility for your children and teach them proper behaviour around dogs. My dogs switch to collie mode, and will do their job of rounding up, which might then include a nip on the lower leg. This is normal collie behaviour with sheep and not attacking. I am clarifying this, please be aware of it, do not play running games with ANY dogs. Both our farm dogs are VERY FRIENDLY, love people, and both live here, this is their home, you are visitors, and the farm needs dogs, which is why they are permitted to meander about and talk to everyone, campers and horse riders alike! If you feel this might be an issue please book elsewhere as we are and remain a dog friendly site. We love our dogs!!

SMOKING

  • There is a strict NO SMOKING POLICY anywhere on the farm itself, and any shared public space on the campsite. You can smoke on your own campsite pitch ONLY. Please pick up all cigarette butts – this is the world’s most common article of litter, so let’s debunk the myth – thank you for your cooperation.
  • Farms have hay and straw and many of the buildings have wood, and bins can set alight, Please respect our farm! No smoking, anywhere!

FIRES AND BBQ’s

  • Fires are permitted within the firepits (each pitch has a stone circle) so please restrict your use on the pitch of any cooking /BBQ to this area only. DO NOT MOVE IT. Burnt grass is dead grass.
  • Fires must be attended to at ALL TIMES.. An unattended fire is an immediate hazard. Please extinguish fires before retiring at night or if unattended for any reason.
  • We sell bags of wood – see the wood store – if this is empty ask the campsite warden or in the shop. £5 per bag of logs.
  • Do not cook inside your tent due to the risk of fire or carbon monoxide poisoning.

EMERGENCIES

  • Fire Emergency Procedure: Raise the alarm; use any available exit; go to the Assembly Point in the main car park; DO NOT try and save possessions from a tent or motor vehicle, you are far more important!
  • In a Medical Emergency, all the Equine staff  are trained First Aiders. In an emergency start with the Campsite Warden, or go to the Riding Centre yard (near the car park) or if later try the house; if serious call 999. Our address is Baystone Bank Farm, Whicham Valley, Near Millom, Cumbria, LA18 5LY. Tell the emergency services you are on the Campsite.
  • For emergencies generally in the countryside we suggest downloading the What3Words App and learn to use it, one day it might save your life.

RUBBISH/littering

  • We are a small remote campsite where disposal of rubbish is really difficult. Please plan to take as much as you can home with you. If you must leave litter behind, all ‘normal’ litter is to be disposed of into the bins at the side of the track towards the car park.
  • Please pick up every single item of litter you created, even cigarette butts, and dispose of these correctly

‘Take only photos, leave only footprints’

NO TENTS, MATTRESSES, AIRBEDS, OR ANY OTHER CAMPING EQUIPMENT IS TO BE DISPOSED OF OR LEFT ONSITE.

ONE TENT CAN FILL OUR BINS SO PLEASE TAKE IT HOME

We thank you for your understanding on this, AND SORRY BUT IF YOU IGNORETHIS RULE  WE WILL CHARGE YOU FOR DISPOSAL OF SUCH ITEMS.

GROUPS – Please see our Groups Policy

ARRIVAL/DEPARTURE

  • Please arrive between 3pm and 7pm. If you are running late please contact the Campsite Wardens, the number is on the information sent to you, the website and Facebook
  • All sites must be vacated by 10.30 am on the day of departure

TOILETS

  • We are on a septic tank system, and if the toilets get blocked this is a nightmare for all campsite users, who immediately lose use of the facility.
  • Accompany your children to the toilet facilities and PLEASE ensure you/your family do not use excessive amounts of toilet roll, be frugal!
  • Our most common cause of a blocked toilet is a child dropping – and trying to flush – an entire toilet roll down the loo. PLEASE supervise your children!
  • PLEASE do not put anything down the loo which is not toilet paper / human waste. We thank you for your consideration in advance! NO sanitary items, use the bin!
  • Please tell us if there is anything wrong, any cleanliness issues, if there is eg no loo roll, if anything is not working…TELL US as although we are checking stringently many times a day we might miss something!  We cannot fix it if we do not know!
  • There is an Elsan point at the far end of the campsite

WE RESERVE THE RIGHT TO ASK YOU TO LEAVE IMMEDIATELY IF THESE RULES ARE NOT FOLLOWED – WITH NO REFUND BEING OFFERED

ANY COSTS INCURRED BY OURSELVES AS A RESULT OF BREAKING THESE RULES WILL BE EXPECTED TO BE PAID FOR, WE RESERVE THE RIGHT TO TAKE FACTUAL AND REASONABLE COSTS FROM THE CARD USED FOR PAYMENT.
